What is your earliest memory of classical music? My parents bringing my sister and I to University of Missouri-Kansas Conservatory concerts and immediately falling in love with the sound of the symphony. Also, the YoYo-Ma episode of Arthur on PBS Kids.

When did you realize you wanted to pursue music as a career? When I realized that I could never picture myself following any other career path—the difficulties were always outweighed by the rewards.

Who is your biggest inspiration? My teacher, Sharon Robinson. She taught me to have relentless ambition, an unwavering work ethic, and the value of musical expression above all else.

What is your favorite piece of music, and why do you love it? Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier never fails to make me cry.

What is some advice you would give to your younger self? Develop an excellent work ethic sooner, and don’t hold your failures up next to someone else’s successes.

Favorite non-classical musician or band: Alt-J

If you could play another instrument, what would it be? Piano
