World-renowned artist and UNESCO Global Goodwill Ambassador Tan Dun has made an indelible mark on the world’s music scene with a creative repertoire that spans the boundaries of classical music, multimedia performance, and Eastern and Western traditions. He is the winner of today’s most prestigious honors, including Grammy, Academy, Grawemeyer, and Shostakovich awards; the Bach Prize; and, most recently, Italy’s Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement. His music has been played throughout the world by leading orchestras, opera houses, international festivals, and on radio and television. He was recently named dean of the Bard College Conservatory of Music, where he will further demonstrate music’s extraordinary ability to transform lives and guide the Conservatory in fulfilling its mission of understanding music’s connection to history, art, culture, and society.
Tan Dun made his Philadelphia Orchestra debut in 2004. In 2013 the orchestra gave the U.S. premiere of his multi-media composition Nu Shu: The Secret Songs of Women, Symphony for 13 Microfilms, Harp, and Orchestra As a conductor of innovative programs around the world, he has led the world’s most esteemed orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw and Metropolitan Opera orchestras; the London, BBC, and Sydney symphonies; the Royal Stockholm, Los Angeles, and Munich philharmonics; the Orchestre National de France; and the Filarmonica della Scala. His current season includes leading the Orchestre National de Lyon in a six-city tour; a four-city tour of Switzerland and Belgium with the Guangzhou Symphony; and engagements with the RAI National Symphony, the Oslo Philharmonic, and the Melbourne Symphony, where he was recently named Artistic Ambassador. Next season’s highlights include conducting the Italian premiere of his Buddha Passion epic with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.
Tan Dun’s individual voice has been heard widely by international audiences. His first Internet Symphony, which was commissioned by Google/YouTube, has reached over 23 million people online.
